To learn reading and writing, babies and young children need to learn:

  • Spoken language by listening and talking
  • That spoken words are made up of smaller sounds; called "phonemes"
  • To put different sounds together to make meaningful words and phrases; called "phonological awareness"
  • Words have stressed rhythms; called "syllables"
  • Letters of the alphabet and their sounds
  • About printed letters, words and books; called "print awareness"
