What should I expect?

-understands 50 words

-Says 1st words

-complies with simple commands occasionally (e.g.: "Give me")

-Points and vocalizes to obtain objects (gesturing)

-recognizes familiar people, objects, and pets

-babbles while looking at a book

-imitates simple actions

-Imitates new sounds and words

-predicts outcomes from events

 

-looks for objects that are removed from vision field

 

 

What are some red flags?

-Infant is unresponsive to adult's greetings, instructions, comments

-Infant is not babbling, cooing, or attempting to vocalize

-Infant does not respond to their name when called

 

 

18 month olds - 24 month olds

What should I expect?

Comprehensive Language

Expressive Language

-understands simple commands ("Show me…")

-At 18 months, says ten names for common objects, actions or people (daddy, book, milk, ball). -Vocabulary should increase to 50-200 words around 24 months

-Follows directions for simple actions

-Asks for names of things

-Points to pictures in a book when named

-shakes head yes/no

-Understand when something is theirs ("Mine.") and may protest to objects being taken away from them

-Has sounds /m, p, n, w, t, and d/ in speech

-Vocabulary "take off" - begins to understand 200+ words

-Begins to put two words together, such as "car go" or "want juice"

 

-Engages in pretend play

 

What are some red flags?

-Infant does not speak at least 15 words by 18 months of age

-Infant does not put two words together to form a simple sentence by 24 months of age

-Infant does not follow simple commands by 24 months of age
